Its purposes are:
•To create an atmosphere which encourages community participation in the visual arts;
•To provide artists with exhibit space and the opportunity to share and develop creative skills;
•To encourage students and younger artists to pursue their talents through education and special events; and
•To stimulate and educate members of the community by bringing an awareness and appreciation of fine art through exhibitions, shows, workshops, classes and demonstrations.
The art league largely depends on volunteers and financial support from the community at large. It is only able to continue its programs through public and private support.
In January of 1963, plans were made for organizing a creative arts group in Vacaville. In May of that year, the Vacaville Art League became a reality. Over 100 people attended the first meeting and workshops were immediately set up. However, there was no facility to meet in, nor a place to display the artists’ works.
The Board learned that the City of Vacaville had purchased the 66-year-old Segura home on Monte Vista Avenue and planned to demolish it. In May of 1965, the City agreed to lease the building to the Vacaville Art League, but the old Victorian home needed much work.
Many of the members rolled up their sleeves and repaired the building. Fundraising projects generated enough money for the materials needed. Local businesses generously donated many supplies. Individuals and organizations contributed. Finally, the Vacaville Art League had a home, and the Gallery opened its doors on March 16, 1968.
Since its humble beginnings, thousands of artists and guests have walked through those doors. The City now has a place to show quality art to visiting dignitaries and to provide a place for the public to participate directly in the visual arts. Its President, Board and Gallery Manager continually strive to provide opportunities for artists of all ages to participate in its events and encourage the public to come and view a wide variety of high quality work created by local quality artists.

The Vacaville Art League is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development and promotion of the visual arts. Our goals are to create an atmosphere that encourages community participation in the visual arts; to provide artists with exhibition space and opportunities to share and develop creative skills; and to stimulate and educate members of the community by bringing an awareness and appreciation of fine art through exhibitions, shows, workshops, classes, and demonstrations.
The Vacaville Art League was formed in 1963 with over 100 people attending the first meeting. However, there was no facility to meet in, nor a place to display the artists’ work. In May of 1965, the City of Vacaville agreed to lease the circa 1880’s Segura home to the Art League, but the old Victorian needed much work. Many of the members rolled up their sleeves and prepared the building. Fundraising projects generated enough money for the materials needed. Local businesses generously gave many supplies. On March 16, 1968 the Vacaville Art Gallery opened its doors for the first time.
Art League Board and Staff
The Vacaville Art League is organized under an elected Board of Directors; all Board members maintain current membership with the Vacaville Art League. The Vacaville Art League Board of Directors sets policy and governs the organization. The Vacaville Art Gallery staff consists of a Gallery Manager and a Gallery Assistant.
Member/Board Meetings are the third Tuesday of each month (except August and December) and are conducted at the Gallery at 6:00 pm. If you would like to present to the Board, please contact the President or Gallery Manager prior to meeting.
The Vacaville Art Gallery rotates shows every 4-6 weeks. Shows range from members’ exhibits to juried and non-juried open exhibitions by guest artists.
There is a reception for each exhibit (including the Annual Student Show) which allows the artist the opportunity to meet and talk with the public and other artists. Reception dates and time vary depending on the exhibit and artists involved.
Gallery Gift Shop
The Gallery Gift Shop sells a wide variety of works created by Vacaville Art League members. A special membership rate is offered for members only wanting to display items in the Gift Shop.
The Vacaville Art League website is where up-to-date information is available for members and non-members. Members have the opportunity to link their personal website to the Vacaville Art League website for free. Monthly exhibits, special events, calls for entry, downloadable application forms, current newsletters and more can be found at www.vacavilleartgallery.org.
Files are maintained of members’ work by the Gallery Manager and are available to curators, collectors and the general public. Artists should submit a bio and/or statement along with samples of work, either slide or photograph, to the Gallery.
Part of what makes the Vacaville Art League unique is how the members support the Vacaville Art League. Volunteers are critical to the success of the Vacaville Art League and we ask all members to volunteer. Volunteer opportunities include fundraising, community service, Juried and Non-Juried Exhibits, calling and mailings. Contact the Gallery Manager to join one of the volunteer committees.
